If you plan to run with your child, there’s a bevy of equipment to consider.
Stroller: I purchased a Bob revolution. I suggest reading this article and considering the following:
- How often will you use this stroller?
- How much are you willing to pay?
- How much room do you have in your trunk, garage?
- Where will you be running with your child and how fast?
- When testing a model, make sure that it’s ergonomically suited for you. You shouldn’t have to bend-over excessively or change your gait.
I do disagree with on one point about jog strollers. I prefer a swivel wheel rather than a fixed. It’s rare, really rare that you will find yourself on a perfectly straight course. With a fixed front wheel, that means you have to tilt the thing up every time there’s a bend in the road.
When you are ready to shop, look for used strollers on Craigslist. Be quick; they go FAST. We bought ours at REI on sale. Through rebates and their membership we ended up getting a $50 check back at the end of the year.
Stroller accessories: The only accessory I have is a car seat adapter. You can also purchase a drink holder or if you plan to run in rain, a cover. I would also recommend a bunting bag (kind of like a sleeping bag) for little ones.
Toys: I’m sure many a person has gotten a good laugh out of the set up I have for Addie when I run. Keeping her amused is the key to my survival and I will stop at nothing. I saw a dad yesterday running with this music box on his stroller and thought it was brilliant. on a small I stock the stroller with a snacktrap full of Goldfish, a sippy cup of water, at least two books, a play cell phone, a bucket and shovel (sometimes I put dirt in it. Yes, she’s a mess by the end of the run, but it keeps her entertained.) When she was an infant, I purchased a fish stroller mobile from Target that clipped to the sides of her car seat. I can’t find it online anymore, but check out these products. You should try and tether all toys to the stroller to prevent things from going overboard. I’ve nearly broken my ankle when Adeline decides to throw Big Bird over the side.
