Perhaps the most problematic of clothing equipment, particularly for nursing moms or post-baby mothers, is the sports bra. I see so many women in Baby Bootcamp who either try to squeeze into their pre-baby bras (usually, too small) or wear the same bra they wore while breastfeeding (usually too big).
You should be fitted for a bra whenever your body shape drastically changes. Go to places that do real bra fittings for sports-related activities, such as LuluLemon, Lucy or Road Runner Sports. If you are big chested or breastfeeding, I recommend a bra with a clasp backing that allows you to adjust the width.
NOTE TO BREASTFEEDING MOMS: You need to wear a sports bra and I recommend one with a clasp in the back. Pump or feed right before you plan to run, then throw on your sports bra. Right after you’re done working out, change into your breast feeding bra. Wearing a tight bra for too long can lead to clogged ducts and YOU DON’T WANT THAT!.
You should consider the following when investing in a bra:
- It should be made of a sturdy material.
- Be aware of SEAMS! Those bras with seams that run through the cups are killer chaffers
- Straps should be thick and soft (you don’t want it cutting into your skin)
- It should be designed for the highest impact sport
- For big breasted women, choose a bra with separate cups for each breast.
- Jump up and down in the dressing room to test its support.
